OSH Requirements

As we approach 'contractor' season farm owners should make sure their policies for occupational health and safety are in order.

Your employment handbook should be the place to put all your rules. You need to identify the hazards, contain or remove the ones you can, for the rest write down the rules.

  • Speed limits for all vehicles
  • How vehicles are to be driven - max number in one vehicle, age of drivers, licenses needed, helmets required
  • Other safety gear for each piece of equipment
  • Management of safety equipment
  • Practices around animal handling
  • Chemicals - handling, applying and storage rules

Make sure your farm workers understand the rules, revisit them every 6 mths. For contractors coming onto farm make sure the rules are available and anything specific - advise them at the time you book their services.
